Kinja'd!!!

Watched the Jaguar’s taillights escape from my vision, we had some good times, but I’m glad to be moving on!

Kinja'd!!!

Now I’ve got some cash in my pocket, what should I buy, Oppo?

Well if I had cash in my pocket, I’d be looking into a Jaguar XJS.

Oh wait...

Uh... well, secondary options: Porsche 944 S2, Porsche 928, ‘63 Studebaker Avanti, ‘88 Pontiac Fiero GT, Pontiac Trans Am GTA, C4 Corvette, Saab Sonett III, Chevy Corvair Corsa Turbo, ‘66 Oldsmobile Toronado, ‘63 Buick Riviera.

I’ve always liked those, kind of wish I bought it off of you. Are you looking for something similarly swanky, or are you planning on heading in some other automotive direction?

I’m very much into pre-74 cars, that’s one of the reasons I sold the Jag. Corvairs are cool, a Riviera would also be neat!

I was only really selling it locally, and they’re pretty readily available if you really want one. I have a small sporty roadster, so now I want a ratty American muscle car project.

In this vain, how about a 61-63 Olds F85 with the little aluminum 3.5L V8? I think those are an up and coming classic.

I never even really knew about these before, I like it! Uncommon, interesting, pretty, and lots of potential. Good suggestion!

Go turbo or go home.

Thanks. I really like one and would love to have a nice one, one day. A couple of things to lookout for, though..

They came with a bunch of engine options... 2 barrel, 4 barrel, 2x4 barrel, and turbo. The turbo cars are very rare and desirable... because they really sucked and most of them got converted back to 2x4 barrels by the dealer under a voluntary recall by Olds.

Also, that engine was used in the Pontiac Tempest/Lemans and Buick Skylark. The early tempest is an interesting one beause it actually featured a Front Engine / Rear Transaxle layout that utilized a “rope drive”, a flexible driveshaft the bowed down under the car. So that might be an even cooler, rarer one to look for.

I’d buy an engineless husk to begin with, and put whatever engine I want in it anyway.

Buy the Traction Avant I linked earlier in Quebec, fix it Roadkill style and drive it home? :P

Personally I always thought a huge part of the appeal of these cars was the funky little 215 V8. The turbo version was the second production turbo engine ever (the Corvair turbo beat it to market by mere weeks). It was also one of the first major, mass market all aluminum engines ever attempted... and it was a pretty big failure for GM. Their casting tech wasn’t quite there yet so they had a lot of porosity problems with the blocks. The initial failure rate was something like 40% and it wasn’t uncommon at all to have blocks make it into cars and after they got a couple dozen miles on them, holes open up and they start weeping oil.

They scrapped the whole thing after 63 and sold the molds to Rover, who perfected it and went on to use it in tons of stuff. A 5.0L version was used in the Land Rover Discovery until 2004. It also served as the basis for the 1966 Repco V8 Formula 1 engine, making it the only American engine to win an F1 World Championship (kind of, since they only really used the block, and actually ended up casing their own... but still!)

Wow, that’s neat! I think maybe you overestimate how much I sold the Jaguar for though, haha. I can’t afford a nice one, but I’m fine with building one up.

Nah, I figured you wouldn’t get enough from the Jag to find a clean F85/Tempest/Skylark. But if you found a ratty one, maybe throw a Rover V8 in it with a DIY turbo setup. Would be interesting and different.
